Clean Air Optima® Air Purifiers - Coronavirus Prevention Concept™t™

A new human coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 first appeared in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019 and has since caused a global pandemic. The new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is the pathogen of COVID-19: an infectious disease caused by this new coronavirus. The disease causes respiratory complaints with symptoms such as cold-like symptoms, coughing, fever and (in more serious cases) respiratory problems.

The coronavirus spreads through human-to-human transmission via direct droplet infection (coughing and sneezing), indirect transmission via surfaces and airborne transmission, especially in indoor environmentsvia so-called aerosols. Aerosols are small solid or liquid particles suspended in the air that are capable of spreading virus particles in the indoor environment.

The risk of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 aerosols and indoor air pollutants

The indoors has become the typical abode for modern man. We often spend as much as 90 per cent of our time there. Many studies have shown that indoor air is often 2 to 5 and even up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) - the agency for environmental protection in the United States - concluded after research that there are more concerns about air pollution indoors than outdoors.

The coronavirus has spread rapidly all over the world and has chosen as its main route of infection the indoor environment: the typical abode of modern man.

Like all other viruses, this new coronavirus needs a carrier (host) such as droplets, dust particles or other pathogens (organisms that cause disease) in the air. In the indoor space, when a person infected with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or talks, microfine moisture droplets, called aerosols, are dispersed. These aerosols are expelled from the throat through the mouth into the indoor space and can remain there for a long period of time.

Susceptibility of viruses to ultraviolet

Hundreds of laboratory studies have shown that ultraviolet light can destroy viruses, bacteria and moulds (Kowalski 2009). Specific tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus have not yet been completed, but many other tests on related coronaviruses, including the SARS coronavirus, confirm that they are very sensitive to inactivation by ultraviolet light.

UV-C energy in the 240-280 nm range is absorbed well by microorganisms. The energy of the UV-C light disrupts the DNA and prevents microorganisms such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus from dividing. Research has shown that UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7 nm achieves the best results. For this reason, Clean Air Optima® air purifiers from the Coronavirus Prevention Concept™ are equipped as standard with UV-C lamps with a wavelength of 254 nm.

The UV-C indoor air disinfection method has been used for many years in various sectors and is a safe, economical and environmentally-friendly alternative to other disinfection methods.
